Tuesday With Nadia Birkenstock

This will be an intimate experience.  Nadia’s style involves teaching, showing, and then lots of hands-on, letting people work at their own pace as she travels through the room, checking on each individual and helping.  If you like this style, this would be a great day of learning for you.

To start this immersion experience, Nadia will show some of her own warmup exercises on the harp which aim at:

  1. Connecting with your instrument

  2. Freeing your body of tension while playing

  3. Working on a clear and energetic  sound through better finger control

  4. Making your sound come alive by means of volume variations

You will also get great ideas to create your own warmup exercises, including custom-tailored ones for the pieces you are working on at the moment.

We will then look at different ways to create your own arrangements.  Using traditional music, and Nadia’s own melodies and song, you will:

  1. Learn how an arrangement can intensify the character of a melody or a song.

  2. Learn to conquer Harmonics!  (Nadia’s are truly gorgeous).

  3. Develop arrangements in a playful way, step by step, from simple to more sophisticated.

  4. Think of the harp as three-dimensional to take advantage of all the sound facets of the harp.

As she teaches the pieces, Nadia will have you using her methods of learning.  This aspect of the day will be a deeper experience of one of her workshops during the weekend, Practicing Effectively.   You do not have to take that class during the weekend as preparation, or you are free to do so.  This, though, is even more of an experience of the method, which will really make it “stick.”

You’ll see how much more fun it is to learn a piece, how much easier, faster, and how much more flexibility it gives you.

As you learn the tunes, Nadia will help you apply these skills of:

  1. Looking at ways to structure a piece in order to learn it more quickly

  2. Best ways to decide on fingerings

  3. Improved ways of “looking ahead” while playing

  4. The  fun of experimenting with mental images in order to improve sound, agility and  expressive playing.
